Road Safety Tips for dog owners:

  • Ensure that your pet is secure at home. Many accidents are caused when a dog escapes from home and roams along his own street or in the local area.
  • Make sure that collars, leads and harnesses are in working order. Dogs can be surprisingly strong and determined when they see a cat, or are startled. The last thing you want is a weak collar when trying to restrain your dog near a busy road.
  • Lead by example. Get your dog into the habit of sitting a few yards back from the curb whenever you come to cross a road. You may be aware of the traffic, but your dog, even when on lead could wander into the road and cause an accident.
  • Always walk curb side of your dog. If your dog is nearer to the road than you, the length of the lead will dictate whether he can get onto the road. If you are always in between him and the road, the chances of him getting onto the road to say hello to the dogs on the other side are very slim.
  • Be visible. Using high visibility, illuminated leads and collars is sensible during night-time walks. Using these accessories will make you and your dog visible to road users, significantly reducing the risk of accidents.
